Change your Mindset, Change your Life.

In my practice, I see firsthand how mindset and beliefs can affect our health and wellbeing.

Our mindset is the lens through which we view the world, and it shapes our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Our beliefs are the things we consider to be true about ourselves and the world around us.

Dr. Alia Crum, a tenured professor of psychology at Stanford University and the founder and director of the Stanford Mind and Body Lab, defines mindset as "core beliefs or assumptions that we have about a domain or category of things that orient us to a particular set of expectations, explanations, and goals."

Dr. Crum's research has shown that mindset can have a powerful impact on our health and well-being. For example, in one study, she found that women who believed that their work was exercise lost weight and improved their cardiovascular health more than women who did not believe that their work was exercise. In another study, she found that students who believed that they could improve their intelligence performed better on academic tests than students who did not believe that they could improve their intelligence.

Here are some examples of mindsets:

  • Growth mindset: The belief that our abilities can be developed through effort and learning.
  • Fixed mindset: The belief that our abilities are fixed and cannot be changed.
  • Healthy mindset: The belief that we can make choices to improve our health and well-being.
  • Unhealthy mindset: The belief that we have little control over our health and well-being.
  • Optimistic mindset: The belief that things will generally work out well for us.
  • Pessimistic mindset: The belief that things are more likely to go wrong than right.

For example, people with a growth mindset tend to be more resilient in the face of challenges and more likely to achieve their goals. People with a healthy mindset tend to make healthier choices and have better health outcomes.

It is important to note that mindsets are not fixed. We can all learn to develop more growth-oriented, healthy, and optimistic mindsets.

When we have a Growth, healthy & positive mindset, we may be more likely to eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. We may also be more resilient in the face of challenges and setbacks.

Consistency is key to making lasting changes. It's important to find a routine that works for you and stick to it, even when it's challenging.

Everyone experiences dips in the middle of the process when they are trying to make changes. This is normal. It's important to be prepared for these dips and have a plan for how to get through them.

At WellPower, we know that dips in the middle of the process are a normal part of making changes. That's why we offer bespoke plans with realistic goals, strategies for overcoming challenges, and a support system to reframe our clients' thoughts, motivate them, and remind them why they started their journey in the first place.
